Esta fiesta se celebra en toda España, especialmente en los lugares de costa, donde la tradición es encender hogueras a medianoche, realizar rituales y saltar sobre el fuego mientras disfrutas de la noche en compañía de tus amigos. Entre los rituales más comunes están escribir tus deseos en un papel para quemarlos en la hoguera y saltar las olas de espalda al mar. Hay quien escribe en el papel los peores momentos del año anterior para quemarlos y entre los estudiantes es tradición arrojar al fuego todos los apuntes del curso (¡cuidado con hacerlo si aún tienes que examinarte en septiembre!).
This festival is held throughout Spain, especially in the places of coast, where the tradition is to light bonfires at midnight, perform rituals and jump on fire while enjoying the night in the company of your friends. Among the most common rituals are to write your desires on a piece of paper to burn them at the stake and jump the waves back to the sea. There are those who write on paper the worst moments of the previous year to burn them and among the students it is tradition to throw into the fire all the notes of the course (be careful to do so if you still have to take a test in September!).

¿Y cuál es el significado de esta celebración? Pues la Noche de San Juan es una fiesta de origen pagano adoptada por el cristianismo. En su origen, se trataba de la celebración del solsticio de verano en el hemisferio norte, donde el 21 de junio es la noche es la más corta del año, y las hogueras se encendían para “dar más fuerza al sol”, que a partir de esos días iba haciéndose más “débil”, ya que los días se van acortando hasta el solsticio de invierno. Además, el fuego purificaba a las personas que asistían a la ceremonia. Más tarde, el cristianismo adoptó esta celebración y la adaptó a su calendario, pasando a celebrarse el 24 de junio, día en que se conmemora el nacimiento de San Juan Bautista. Según la Biblia, Zacarías mandó encender una hoguera para celebrar el nacimiento de su hijo Juan.
And what is the meaning of this celebration? Saint John´s Eve is a feast of pagan origin adopted by Christianity. Originally, it was the celebration of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, where June 21 is the shortest night of the year, and the bonfires were lit to “give more strength to the sun”, which from those days was becoming more “weak”, as the days are shortened to the winter solstice. In addition, the fire purified the people who attended the ceremony. Later, Christianity adopted this celebration and adapted it to its calendar, which took place on June 24, the day on which the birth of St. John the Baptist is commemorated. According to the Bible, Zechariah had a bonfire lit to celebrate the birth of his son John.
