Debido a la climatología seca y calurosa de Córdoba, los habitantes de la ciudad, primero los romanos y más tarde los musulmanes, adaptaron la tipología de casa popular a las necesidades, centrando la vivienda en torno a un patio, que normalmente tenía una fuente en el centro y en muchas ocasiones un pozo que recogía el agua de lluvia. Los musulmanes readaptaron este esquema dando entrada a la vivienda desde la calle a través de un zaguán y colocando vegetación abundante para aumentar la sensación de frescor.
Due to the dry and hot climate of Cordoba, the inhabitants of the city, first the Romans and later the Muslims, adapted the typology of popular house to the needs, centering the house around a courtyard, which normally had a fountain in the center and on many occasions a well that collected rainwater. Muslims re-adapted this scheme by entering the house from the street through a hall and placing abundant vegetation to increase the feeling of freshness.
Existen dos tipos claros de patios: el primero de casa unifamiliar donde las estancias se distribuyen alrededor de este. Suele estar enclaustrado y el suelo es enlosado o de mosaico empedrado. El segundo, de casa de vecinos, hoy en día menos populares, desde donde se accede a las viviendas. Suele tener dos plantas, con lo que el patio se enriquece con balcones corridos, escalera y tejadillo. Los suelos suelen ser empedrados. Es frecuente el pozo en lugar de la fuente y lavadero común.
There are two clear types of patios: the first of the townhouse where the rooms are distributed around it. It is usually cloistered and the floor is tiled or stoned. The second, from the house of neighbors, today less popular, from where you access the houses. It usually has two floors, so the patio is enriched with balconies, staircase and shingle. Soils are usually cobbled. The well is common instead of the common fountain and laundry room.
El barrio más característico es el del Alcázar Viejo, entre el Alcázar y la parroquia de San Basilio, aunque también los encontramos por el barrio de Santa Marina, alrededor de San Lorenzo y la Magdalena. En el entorno de la Mezquita-Catedral, el barrio de la judería presenta también ejemplos de gran belleza y antigüedad. El exponente más bello lo encontramos en el Palacio de Viana, que ofrece doce patios diferentes.
The most characteristic neighborhood is that of the Alcázar Viejo, between the Alcázar and the parish of San Basilio, although we also find them in the neighborhood of Santa Marina, around San Lorenzo and The Magdalene. In the surroundings of the Mosque-Cathedral, the Jewish quarter also presents examples of great beauty and antiquity. The most beautiful exponent can be found in the Viana Palace, which offers twelve different courtyards.
Desde el año 1921 el Ayuntamiento de Córdoba organiza durante la primera quincena de mayo un concurso de Patios, en el que los propietarios de estos engalanan sus viviendas con ahínco para conseguir el prestigioso galardón ofertado por el Consistorio. Paralelamente se celebra un festival con numerosas actuaciones folclóricas donde se dan cita los mejores cantaores y bailaores de la tierra. Todo esto acompañado del vino Montilla-Moriles, fino de la tierra con tapas típicas.
Since 1921 the City council of Córdoba organizes during the first fortnight of May a contest of Patios, in which the owners of these decorate their homes hard to obtain the prestigious award offered by the Consistory. At the same time there is a festival with numerous folk performances where the best singers and dancers on earth meet. All this accompanied by Montilla-Moriles wine, fine earth with typical tapas.
