From old tobacco factory to University of Seville
La Universidad de Sevilla data originalmente del siglo XV. Creado por el archidiácono Maese Rodrigo Fernández de Santaella, originalmente se llamaba Colegio de Santa María de Jesús, y fue confirmado como universidad en 1505 por la bula papal del Papa Julio II.
The University of Seville originally dates to the 15th century. Created by Archdeacon Maese Rodrigo Fernández de Santaella, it was originally called Colegio de Santa Maria de Jesus, and was confirmed as a practicing university in 1505 by the papal bull of Pope Julius II.
El edificio principal de la Universidad de Sevilla es conocido como la “Antigua Fábrica de Tabacos”, llamada así por su uso original. El edificio industrial del siglo XVIII fue el primero establecido en Europa y es uno de los edificios arquitectónicos más grandes y mejores de su tipo en España, así como uno de los más antiguos de su tipo en Europa, desde la época del Antiguo Régimen. Desde mediados del siglo XX alberga la sede de la rectoría de la Universidad de Sevilla y algunas de sus facultades. Este hermoso edificio es también el escenario de la famosa ópera Carmen, de Bizet. Carmen era una trabajadora ficticia en la fábrica de tabaco, la historia original era una novela de Prosper Mérimée. La universidad está situada en el centro de la ciudad junto al prestigioso Hotel Alfonso XIII, que acogió a la realeza de Europa y a muchas celebridades internacionales.
The main building of the University of Seville is known as the “Old Tobacco Factory”, named for its original use. The industrial building of the 18th century was the first established in Europe and it is one of the largest and best architectural buildings of its kind in Spain, as well as one of the oldest of its kind in Europe, from the time of the Ancient Regime. Since the middle of the 20th century it has housed the headquarters of the rectorship of the University of Seville and some of its faculties. This beautiful building is also the setting for the renowned opera, Carmen, by Bizet. Carmen was a fictional worker in the tobacco factory, the original story being a novella by Prosper Mérimée. The university is located in the center of the city next to the prestigious Hotel Alfonso XIII, which hosted Europe’s royalty and many an international celebrity.

El antiguo lema de la universidad es: “Igualdad, Libertad, Justicia y Pluralismo”. La misión declarada de la universidad es educar a los estudiantes que harán la investigación y el desarrollo necesarios para la innovación científica y tecnológica. Esto se refleja en el número de grados ofrecidos; los estudiantes que asisten a la universidad tienen una selección de 65 asignaturas diferentes y una de las más amplias gamas de instalaciones académicas y deportivas de España, lo que la convierte en una universidad popular tanto para estudiantes españoles como internacionales.
The ancient motto of the university is: “Equality, Liberty, Justice and Pluralism”. The university’s stated mission is to educate students who will do the research and development necessary to scientific and technological innovation. This is reflected in the number of degrees offered; students attending the university have a choice of 65 different subjects and one of the widest ranges of academic and sporting facilities in Spain, making it a popular university for both Spanish and international students.

La universidad tiene acuerdos con 15 organizaciones internacionales, incluyendo el Consejo de Intercambio Educativo Internacional, el Consorcio Universitario de Estudios Internacionales, Estudios Internacionales en el Extranjero, SUNY New Paltz y Wells College y St. John’s University. La Universidad de Sevilla ha colaborado con el Real Colegio Complutense de la Universidad de Harvard desde 2015.
The university has agreements with 15 international organizations including the Council on International Educational Exchange, the College Consortium for International Studies, International Studies Abroad, SUNY New Paltz and Wells College and St. John’s University. The University of Seville has had a partnership with the Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard University since 2015.
